STERILIZATION OPTIONS

Not Every Pet Needs the Same Sterilization Surgery

Spaying and neutering is not one decision. It is several, and the right one depends on your pet’s breed, age, health, and how you live together. We offer five options and we lay the trade-offs out plainly, because the decision is yours to make and it is easier to make with the whole picture in front of you.

Ovary-sparing spay
Removes the uterus and leaves the ovaries in place.

Castration
The conventional neuter, removing both testicles.

Vasectomy
Sterilizes a male dog while leaving the testicles in place

Ovariectomy
Removes the ovaries through a smaller incision than a full spay.

Spay (ovariohysterectomy)
The conventional spay, removing both the ovaries and the uterus.

Locally Owned Veterinary Care in Victoria

Vic West Pet Hospital is a locally owned veterinary clinic located at 526 Esquimalt Road in Victoria, British Columbia. We serve dog and cat families across Vic West, Songhees, Esquimalt, James Bay and downtown Victoria, providing wellness care, dentistry, surgery, diagnostics, same-day urgent care, and end-of-life care both in the clinic and at home. Vic West Pet Hospital holds Full Accreditation with no limitations from the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia, and all five of our veterinarians are registered with the College. We have been on Esquimalt Road since 2017, owned by the veterinarians who work here rather than by a group somewhere else. Cats have their own exam room and a heated exam table. Keeping complete care in one building means your pet is not sent across town for the next step. The clinic is open Monday and Saturday from 9:00am to 6:00pm and Tuesday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:00pm, closing daily from 1:00pm to 1:30pm. We are closed on Sundays and statutory holidays. Same-day urgent appointments are available during clinic hours.

Saying Goodbye at Home

Some goodbyes belong at home, on a familiar bed, with the people your pet knows best. We make house calls for end-of-life care in Victoria. If you would rather be with us, the clinic has a quiet comfort room with a private exit, so you do not have to walk back out through a waiting room.

We are on Esquimalt Road in Vic West, a few minutes from the middle of Victoria across the Johnson Street Bridge. Dog and cat families come to us from Vic West and Songhees, from Esquimalt just west along the same road, and from James Bay and downtown Victoria. If you are coming from the Inner Harbour side, we are a short drive over the bridge and along the water, and the clinic is easy to find from either direction on Esquimalt Road.

URGENT CARE

Same-Day Urgent Care in Victoria

Some problems will not keep. If your dog or cat is suddenly unwell, limping, vomiting, off their food, or simply not themselves, call us and we will find room the same day wherever we can.

Please call (778) 265-4500 before you come in rather than arriving unannounced. A phone call lets our team hear what is happening, tell you what to watch for on the way, and have the right people and equipment ready when you arrive. Urgent cases are seen in order of clinical need, so the sickest patient goes first.
